Trying to move products out of the house that have Fluorescent lamps inside, since they contain toxic mercury. This quality LED based mirror fits the bill and I can finally get rid of my wife's old mirror that was illuminated with a fluorescent ring lamp / bulb. My wife loves this mirror! The other really bad thing about most fluorescent lamps is that they put out Ultra-Violet (UV) light, and that can cause eye problems over time. There is a lot of info on the web about UV and cataracts, macular degeneration, etc. Fluorescent lamps put out the highest amount of UV compared to other common light bulbs. The standard Edison bulb (incandescent) puts out very little UV, but a quality LED bulb puts out no UV. The LEDs in this mirror seem to be very high quality. You can tell by how the color red looks when illuminated with this mirror, compared to a cheap LED flashlight. Turn out the bathroom lights, and illuminate red on a package with this mirror, and then with this mirror off, illuminate red with an LED flashlight (all other lights out). The difference is incredible. Reds look better with this mirror than with our old fluorescent vanity mirror as well. Cheap LED mirrors use cheap LEDs, like the kind in flashlights. Do the test yourself if you have a cheap LED mirror. This is an excellent product, no toxic mercury, good for the environment and better for our health!

Another fantastic family hit from Pixar

Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo

YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE.

There. Now that I've said that, I should tell you that this is NOT solely a childrens' movie, but will be enjoyed as much (if not more) by adults. The cleverness of Pixar will never cease to amaze me. Only they could take a concept like a full-length movie about fish and make it totally believable. This film succeeds n being very, very funny. Heck, I'm 16 and saw it in the theater with only my mother. The two of us were laughing hysterically throughout the entire thing!

There's alot of sadness and emotion in this movie and some absolutely terrific voice acting--the voice cast is top-notch. There are some touching moments and subtle messages to be heard by all, not just kids. I look forward with anticipation to the DVD release of this wonderful movie. The suspense never lets up; encounters with jellyfish, a whale, and a deep-sea lanturn fish make every moment exciting.

As we know, every Disney/Pixar film is associated with its own special "short." Well, this one is the best yet, and the short film sets you up for the great feelings you'll have while seeing "Finding Nemo." I won't give away the storyline, but it involves a cute snowman, a water globe, and some tropical souvenirs that completely ready one for the overwhelming tropical-ness of the feature film.

One thing I can't get over is how true-to-life these characters are. The attention to finding a unique species for each fish is incredible and adds a whole new, educational, dimension to the movie. There are some memorable characters in "Finding Nemo." First and foremost is Marlin, the lovable clownfish who is an overprotective father to his adventurous son, Nemo. Then there's Dory, the regal blue tang with the memory problem. She provides much of the comic relief but is also an immensely "real" character. Bruce is a mako shark who wants to get rid of the typical image of sharks as mindless eating machines. Crush is a 150-year-old sea turtle with a cool-surfer-dude attitude. Nigel is a helpful pelican. The whole thing takes place in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia.

And then there are the aquarium fish, who invite Nemo into their 'club' when he gets scooped from the sea. He goes through the initiation ceremony at Mt. Wannahockaloogee, complete with tiki statues and all. The animation is awesome. Their group includes Peach, the lookout starfish; Deb, a delusional fish who thinks her reflection is her sister; a French shrimp, a puffer fish, a yellow tang, and a royal gramma. They are led by Gill, a moorish idol who longs to return to the ocean.

This film is excellent; it deserves a sequel...

Overall this is one film that nobody should miss--parents, kids, or otherwise. I hope this review has convinced you to go get yourself a ticket to "Finding Nemo."

Awesome watch!

Casio GR8900A 7 G Shock Tough Digital

Casio GR8900A 7 G Shock Tough Digital

I have small wrists and the thing is big but fits. Not bulky or heavy as I would have thought (which is a good thing). Solid construction (as expected for a G-Shock). Doesn't squeak like another poster commented about. Great illumination - light blue text on dark purple background...very easy to see in the dark. Digits not as easy to see in daylight as other watches, but you'd be buying those watches if 100% clarity was your number one priority. This isn't hard to see per se, just not as easy as others. It might take you maybe a millisecond or more than usual to make out the digits. If you're like me, you're gonna end up looking at your watch, immediately forgetting the time and having to look at it again.

Easy to set up and pretty sweet arm candy (though a hot woman would definitely trump this). I put it on and don't feel all full of douchebaggery that people with big bright watches are prone to having.

Simple concept - big white watch with cool functions that can take an ass-kicking.

Wonderful Time Travel

If Cant Have You ebook

If Cant Have You ebook

I enjoy time travel stories. I especially enjoy romantic time travel stories, beginning with the first time I saw "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. Berg's delightful foray into the genre is not eclipsed by "Somewhere..", however. It succeeds on so many levels, beginning with the allure the old time Hollywood stars held for America -- Gable, Power, Flynn, et al -- and now we have Montgomery. Picturing in one's mind's eye the glamour of the estates, the posh parties, the fancy cars, and those wonderful b/w films from the 1930s -- ah, it almost makes one long to return to those days -- to the Hollywood that no longer exists except in dreams.

But it's better to read about them and escape into a never-never land of romance. That's what happened when I read this book. I had a wonderful reading experience, and had a tear in my eye at the end (all the while smiling). I thank Ms. Berg for putting her talent to "paper" and making my day a whole lot brighter!

A wonderful sequel to the Marann

Daughters Suralia Tales Tolari ebook

Daughters Suralia Tales Tolari ebook

I've been waiting anxiously for Daughters of Suralia for months, since I read The Marann.

This was a challenging book and really brought home that even though the Tolari are humanlike, they think differently than humans and they will act in different ways from humans. Consequently, some of the actions that propel the plot forward will challenge some readers. I think this is great, because if I wanted to read a romance about a culture that is the same as mine, well, then, I'd have picked up a Harlequin Romance. Daughters of Suralia is definitely not that. The author is clear that the differences ARE hard for her human characters to take. She doesn't make them acquiesce to everything that is strange and hard to understand. And it's not all sunny days, either.

The writing was good, I understood where things were going and unlike so many self-published books, this one was edited so there weren't any grammar, spelling or punctuation howlers to interrupt the flow. I am looking forward to more books about the Tolari and their interactions with the humans as well as the other races of space.

Thank you, Christie Meierz, for another lovely book.

Pestilence: Looking in the Rear View Mirror

Pestilence A Medieval Tale Plague

Pestilence A Medieval Tale Plague

As a public health worker, I was excited to pick up Pestilence, by Jeani Rector. And I was not disappointed. Whenever I pick up a book in which disease is a big feature in the story, I often get ready to pick it apart if it's not someone who has a background in infectious disease, because I'm kind of a jerk like that. But there wasn't much to pick at. Ms. Rector has clearly done a lot of research, not just about the disease and its history, but about the conditions of London and the feudal system. And she does something that few authors do so well as this author does: show how all of the different conditions contributed to the perfect storm. I'm a medical anthropologist. I have little snippets of knowledge about very specific things, but I'll confess that medieval history, names and dates, are not my forte. I struggled to stay awake in history class as soon as dates and names of people started droning from my teachers' mouths. But if I had had a book like this when I was in school, I would have remembered every history lesson. Not only does she explain the history of the Black Death, but each of her characters was alive and engaged me in caring about what happened to them, whether that was holding my breath hoping that the heroine survives, or wanting to stab the bad guys and rub fleas all over them. She has created a living history. I would use this book to teach because bringing events to life is the best way to engage people and make them remember.

Very impressive

Ritmo Mundo 221 Yellow Chronograph

Ritmo Mundo 221 Yellow Chronograph

The easiest thing to say is that this book is amazing. From Scott Bourne's "Black Box" columns in Slap Magazine, to his video parts and more recent poetry books, the man has shown a serious dedication to quality across a variety of media. A Room With No Windows is Bourne's first novel and one that is fully worth the decade of anticipation that preceded its publication. Bourne notes in the introduction that he writes to release himself from shame. To this end, Bourne casts himself the main character in a story that is as impressive in its introspection as in its illumination of other people and places. With alcohol as a "seasoning for sin," a single man explores the differences between love and sex while coming to understand San Francisco's geography based on the different neighborhoods where he wakes up after going home with women. He makes these beds when he leaves them, seeks a cup of coffee and a park, then wanders back to the Webster Street apartment where he resides throughout the novel. There is a beautiful passage about installing a door that provides slightly more light into Bourne's windowless room.

Bourne proceeds to detail the various hustles and camaraderie that ensue when a group of housemates is determined to live life without "real jobs." One roommate's interview for a valet position leads to the creation of the illegitimate but thoroughly respectable San Francisco Valet company. One night on the job, Bourne ends up driving a tipsy woman in a rare vehicle back to her palace that is the only house in San Francisco that watches the sun rise over the Bay to the east. This married woman seeks sex and companionship that her absent husband cannot provide, so Bourne accompanies her to dinners, ballets and sleepovers, through which he provides us consistently astute social and romantic analysis. That Bourne leaves her after realizing the love she still holds for her husband is indicative of the high standard to which Bourne holds himself and the confusion in which he finds himself mired.

Bourne has mentioned his admiration of Lawrence Durrell and Henry Miller, both writers noted for their eroticism. A Room With No Windows features sexual writing on par with these or any other authors. Once he leaves the married woman, his next serious girlfriend is a working orphan who offers Scott a complete love that he alternates between accepting and rejecting, with plenty of sex as he contemplates. "It was the filthiest of deeds we did that freed the human soul from the restraints of society, for it was society that created the wall that made nature perverse and these deeds need not be denied." There are many promising and happy passages that leave the reader longing to embody the character, but the romantic and fraternal situations built on unofficial and incomplete understandings crumble in tragic fashion as the reader suffers at a helpless remove. Bourne escapes to Paris at the end of this book, where readers will be privileged if Bourne creates as magnificent of a work about his next decade as A Room With No Windows is a testament to a young man's twenties.

A Wonderful Collection

Corpus Christi Bret Anthony Johnston

Corpus Christi Bret Anthony Johnston

I first became aware of Brett Anthony Johnston because of a terrific story that he had in the Fall 2011 issue of American Short Fiction titled "Paradeability" about a father coping with the aftermath of his wife's death and his son's obsession with learning how to become a clown, which is the boy's way of coping with his mother's loss. It's a greatly paced and nuanced story, offering wonderful insights into how the father and son cope with tragedy. All the skill at display in that piece made me go searching for more work by Johnston and this collection didn't let me down. Each story offers a terrific premise, great character insight and deft writing.

The 10 stories in the piece, all located in or near Corpus Christi, Texas, are:

1. Waterwalkers - 31 pp - My favorite story in the collection. While a hurricane is bearing down on Corpus Christi, a man runs into his ex-wife in a hardware store. They haven't seen each other in years, since they separated and divorced after the death of their son. The story is filled with evidence of why they had the original connection, and how it got marred by the pain of losing their child.

2. I See Something You Don't See - 29 pp - The first in a trilogy of stories about a son who's had to take time off from his teaching job and post-graduate studies in order to move back to Texas to take care of his mother who is dying from cancer. Here his mother is hopeful that she still has some time to enjoy life, but when the son learns her cancer has actually taken a turn for the worse, he keeps the news from her for a while and is wracked with guilt about keeping a secret he knows will shatter all her newfound hope.

3. In the Tall Grass - 27 pp -- A son who has a distant relationship with a father he worships witnesses an episode in which the father erupts into violence, kicking an already hobbled man in his weak knee because of a dispute over the rent the father owes on a stall in a horse barn. The boy, eager for the connection, is mystified by why his father would take him along to witness such a scene.

4. Outside the Toy Store - 10 pp - A widow meets a woman he dated five years earlier, after his wife died and when his daughter was gravely ill. The woman is with her twin, three-year-old boys whom she had with another man after their relationship ended. The encounter begins pleasantly, with each of them recalling fond memories of their time together, but then their interaction takes a surprising turn that reveals much about the man's current state of mind.

5. Corpus Christi - 35 pp - The one story I wasn't thrilled by. It gets a little too artsy for me with the point of view shifting from one character to the next, and there are sections you have to read several times just to figure out what's going on. It's all about the at first circumstantial, and then tragic interaction between a man whose suicidal wife is in a psychiatric hospital and the sister of a soldier who's been committed there after brutally beating up a fellow soldier on the base. On the road later, there's an even more fateful encounter between the husband, the sister, and another soldier from the base who brought her to the hospital.

6. The Widow - 26 pp - The second installment in the trilogy of stories about son Lee and his mother, Minnie, who's dying of cancer. Set again in the present moment when Lee is caring for her, the story reveals through several flashbacks how close Minnie had been to her late husband, and how she'd never fully emotionally recovered from his sudden death a few years earlier from a heart attack.

7. Two Liars - 27 pp - Another story about a young boy witnessing the wayward ways of a father he adores. In this piece, the son watches his father arrive at startling decision for how to deal with the family's financial woes - he sets their house on fire.

8. Anything That Floats - 12 pp - To escape the heat during a prolonged drought, a mother, whose husband is in the hospital, takes her snake-obsessed son to a pool at a hotel managed by a man she had an affair with the year before as payback for her husband's philandering.

9. Bird of Paradise - 22 pp - A teenaged boy gets involved with a friend's crazy father who is having an affair with a woman and asks the boys to steal things from his lover's house. But things taken a dramatic turn when the cuckolded husband, having learned of the affair, shows up at his rival's house with a gun.

10. Buy for Me the Rain - 29 pp - The final story in the Lee and Minnie trilogy packs an incredible wallop. Some incredibly moving scenes as the son sings to his mother, hoping to relieve her final painful moments. There is also a heart-wrenching description of of the mother's final breaths and what the son has to witness as he watches life seep out of his mother. Combined with those moving scenarios is a brutally honest portrait of the son's secret wish that his mother's funeral might give him the opportunity to reunite with the great love of his life, a flighty woman whom he quickly realizes can't give him all he wants even after she does come back into his life and they restore at least a physical connection.

Relic Fossil Champagne Stainless Bracelet

Relic Fossil Champagne Stainless Bracelet

I was reluctant when my wife chose this item on Amazon, because the price seemed too low. When it arrived, she was delighted, and had it sized the next day.

Of the several watches I pre-screened for her, my wife chose this because of its looks, plus the fact that it did not have one of those over-sized dials. When it arrived she was even happier, because the size, weight, and gold and silver color matched her tastes and just about anything she would wear.

I liked it because she liked it, and showed her happiness that night. One of the main reasons I selected this for her scrutny is the fact that it appeared water resistant. The wife is a supervisor for a national restuarant chain. Some other reviews for other watches mentioned that they had moisture buildup under the crystal, but this is not the case with this watch. I had originally favored a watch that was almost $200 but this $45 dollar watch proved to be the best deal.

The Girl in 6E ebook

The Girl in 6E ebook

The first book that I read of Alessandra Torre's was Blindfolded Innocence and that left me reeling for its sequel, which I am still eagerly waiting for... That is why I liked the authors Facebook page. I am glad that I did because I would not have known about the release of her newest book, The Girl in 6e.

After the 1st chapter review:

The Girl in 6e had me captivated in the first chapter. It will keep you interested and unable to put the book down because it shows you in the first chapter that it is a mystery book and you will not be able to guess what happens in the next chapter.I can not put the book down and I cant wait to find out how it ends. I will share another review then.

Review upon completion:

I just finished reading the book and I am really impressed. It only took me one day to read it and I could not put it down. The first chapter had me hooked. What started out as a book that conveyed mystery and self loathing turned into a story that led to redemption and freedom from fear of what she thought she would always become. I like the way the story was told from the viewpoint of the characters that made the story complete. I strongly suggest purchasing this book and it has become my favorite.

WOW!!!

Obsession Darkness Falls ebook

Obsession Darkness Falls ebook

This is a debut novel. I am completely blown away at the talent this author possesses. It is a very rare occasion that a book will not only stay with me but have me questioning my beliefs. So much of what I want to say in this review would spoil the book for anyone just picking it up but I would very much like to see a discussion opened on the message board about this title.

This is an erotic read and the sex plays a big role in the story line. Its the sub plot that really grabs you- the push and pull between the hero and heroine, the struggle for dominance and the understanding of submission. This is not by any stretch of the imagination your typical kinky romance. I experienced every emotion one could in a single book.

I hesitated on my rating for this book simply because of the subject matter. Again, I don't want to delve into that here because it may spoil the book for some. This truly is a descent into the darkest parts of the human psyche and I was not at all prepared for it. I found myself so deeply rooted in my own personal beliefs that I could not condone certain actions. Having said that, I could not in good conscience give this book anything less than 5 stars. The author has deviated from the erotic norm and crafted a remarkably original story with a flawless delivery. The uniqueness alone warrants 4 stars, but the detailed look into each of the main characters view points and the almost poetic way that she describes their emotions cinched that 5th star. She has me questioning my beliefs, which in my opinion, is a true mark of greatness. I will most certainly be looking for the next installment in this series.

Best Lesbian Romance 2013 Radclyffe

Best Lesbian Romance 2013 Radclyffe

I was introduced to Steve, via my local writing guild. The Limestone Landing of Maysville KY.

Steve's writing is a Sunday drive though Kentucky in a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Seville. Complete with a mystery, a personal danger to a young woman as she watches her friends being picked off one by one by a deranged madman, who has obvious delight in tormenting her with the knowledge.

Combine this with references to several NE Kentucky areas, I know very well and one particular element that only a true Kentuckian would understand, and you get an enjoyable read. Interesting, light weight, and I want to point out strongly; it's realistic.

I had just finished "We the Underpeople" by Cordwainer Smith. It actually took me nearly a month to read; which is far longer than it should have for a book of it's size. I have to sit and read slowly. Sometimes re-read a page to fully grasp the prose. Much like Tolekin's Silmarillion. Dry, difficult to comprehend, beyond my comprehension. Even with nearly 40 years of living in the science fiction, and fantasy genera.

Steve's book came right after Smith's tome. It was like I spent a month working at a factory; dead tired, needing to decompress, then suddenly given a vacation. The delight in reading it was it's strong basis in reality.

Coming from a background of science fiction, fantasy, yes even the occasional comic. I enjoy detective fiction, and mysteries. Unlike Dick Tracy, Sherlock Holmes, Perry Mason, or Hercule Poirot,

Steve's detectives, police and even the victims are not bigger than life. You don't have an autistic Holmes, or a brilliant Mason. You have a /real/ detective eating do donuts, at the coffee shop, Investigating a /real crime./

The red herrings keep you guessing. I was completely taken by surprise at the end, for I wasn't given any clue on the true antagonist, while given plenty of faux herrings. It also gave a faint idea that there may be a sequel but what that is even I cannot guess.

All in all, I strongly recommend Steve's works judging by this one book. Kindle, or paper version it's worth the read.

(Personally; I recommend the paper versions. No worry about loosing your e-versions, and you don't want Steve to mark up your Kindle with his autograph :)

Israeli Law and Order

The Missing File D Mishani

The Missing File D Mishani

This book is compelling for its vivid portrait of Israeli life, not in the glamorous cafes of Tel Aviv but in the streets of Holon, a less than glamorous suburb. The main character is interesting, for the author has shunned creating an Israeli superhero and chosen instead to offer us a man disappointed in life, relying on colleagues for insights, and, in the case of this book, guilty for ignoring a mother's plea about her missing 16 year old son. But not is all that it seems, and, slyly, the book undermines the cliches of the detective story even as it follows standard mystery conventions. This series will deservedly do well, so it is worthwhile discovering it at the beginning of its fame. The only flaw was that some of the language is stilted, though it is impossible to determine whether the fault lies with the author or translator.

Slow start but great ending!

The Next Three Days

The Next Three Days

This is my type of movie. Fast-paced suspense movie with a few twists.

Russell Crowe, who I really enjoyed in this, plays John, a devoted husband and father whose wife is convicted of murder. After losing appeal after appeal, he decides to take matters into his own hands to free her since he fears for her emotional well-being. He meets an ex-con who has written a book about breaking out of jail (Liam Neeson who I absolutely love!). Neeson gives him tips and the movie from here is excellent and kept me on the edge of my seat.

Some of the things John, a community college teacher, does are a bit unbelievable but if you can ignore that, you will enjoy this movie a lot. From learning how to make bump keys to committing criminal offences to get the money that he needs for a family of three to go on the run, you root for him all the way. I have never been a Russell Crowe fan but I found his acting was fantastic; you root for him even though you know he is committing morally reprehensible acts. Brian Dennehy who plays John's father is really good and Elizabeth Banks as John's wife Lara is quite believable.

Well worth watching and re-watching, which I am going to do tonight with my teens since they haven't seen it yet.

The reason I am posting this review is that both watches stopped keeping time. I did many searches looking as to why this happened, surmising that there were two batteries in each watch; one for time, one for video/pictures.
I couldn't find any information about this, so I finally took one of them apart.

It's very easy to do.
A notch on the back cover can be popped off using a small flat head screwdriver.
Once it's off, you'll see the watch is really two items. The camera part of the watch is the first think you'll see, with the rechargeable battery attached by wires to the circuitry.
Once the battery is carefully moved to the side, you'll see 2 small phillips head screws. When they are removed, the camera portion of the watch easily comes out of the case and can be set aside.
Under that, there is the time keeping part of the watch and the battery for it is exposed. This battery is not rechargeable and needs to be replaced when exhausted.
Don't worry about the outside button controls. They do not have to be removed at all, as the camera portion isn't physically attached to them.

The battery number is SR626SW which some battery sites indicate is equivalent to 377 (SR626SW).
These batteries can be purchased here or other sites for as little as $3.99 for a 5 pack. One site I've been to has even had them in 10 packs for the same price.

I hope that this helps anyone that has the watch or is about to purchase one will know what to do when the time keeping mode stops or is inaccurate.

For the price, the watch is quite good.

4 1/2 STARS ~ Excellent Science Fiction Film Hits the Mark!

Silhouette Sparrow Molly Beth Griffin

Silhouette Sparrow Molly Beth Griffin

My favorite directors these days are people who know how to use their medium to tell a story. For too long we've been stuck with films that basically point a hand-hel camera at the actors and pay no regard to things like cinematography and audio design. But now great film-making seems to be coming back into style. On the forefront of this return to good old-fashioned great film-making that would make Capra and Ford proud are three directors. Joe Wright (who single-handedly revitalized Jane Austin films), Andrew Niccol (who keeps making us question everything we know by pushing an idea to its logical limit), and now Joseph Kosinski (who now with his second film shows that his unique style is here to stay).

Trying to describe Oblivion is at once easy and impossible. It borrowers heavily from every sci-fi trope imaginable, and yet feels like a breath of fresh air. It's by-the-numbers and yet feels quite original. But one thing is for sure. If you like this sort of film you will find that it's very, very good.

When Tron Legacy came out a lot of people thought it had no plot, no depth, lousy acting, etc, etc. I happily pointed out to these people that all the depth of the movie was under the surface, in the subtly of the camera angles, the expressions on faces, the words quickly spoken that might be missed on the first viewing. You had to pay attention to catch the real story, which was told through visuals and use of music. This was greatly aided by the fact that the film was cut to the music instead of the other way round. Watching Oblivion I can say that exactly the same thing is true. There is a great story, but it's not told through monologs and conversations. It's told through the visuals, the music, and overall FEEL of a scene. Again, the music propels the film, giving very powerful emotion to scenes. And like Tron Legacy, this movie is so pretty visually and musically that you'll want to buy the soundtrack and the Blu-Ray.

Some people watched the trailer and thought it gave away the plot of the movie. It ain't so. The trailer gives away the first five minutes. In this movie nothing is as it first appears, and while you may see the plots twists coming, they are still done exceptionally well (both times I saw the film in the theater I started laughing at key moments because the way a plot twist was handled was so dang awesome).

The strength and weakness of this film is the obvious. It rips bits and pieces from everything from Wall-E to Star Trek:The Motion Picture and the game Portal. Mostly though, if you've seen Tron:Legacy it will remind you of that film. From the austere clean sci-fi feel of buildings and drones, to the strong resemblance between Quorra and Julia, from the barrel-rolling dog-fight chase scene to a final climactic confrontation with "the creator" set to blasting triumphant music, it all feels very similar. But in this case, it's definitely not a bad thing. Both movies are amazing and well worth watching repeatedly.

The Favored Daughter Womans Afghanistan

The Favored Daughter Womans Afghanistan

As a Muslim I am grateful to Fawzia Koofi to have expressed the strength and ease I find in Islam in a book that is relevant and accessible to readers beyond those who read religious texts. Describing the kindness of others in extreme adversity, she writes, "Even though they didn't have much for themselves they still gave what little they could. This is what it means to be a true Muslim." Clarifying the essence of Islamic modesty, regardless of cultural or governmental dictates, she writes, "Covering the hair with a head scarf and wearing a long loose tunic that covers one's arms, chest and bottom is enough to satisfy the Islamic rule of being modest before God." Her vivid and horrifying stories of Taliban rule support my opinion of "how much the Taliban had damaged Islam." Above all, Fawzia Koofi gives voice to the dignity and respect Muslim girls and women are due within the tenets of the religion. Yes, many people will credit Islam with allowing the father to beat the wife, and I think the author makes it clear that her father's actions were a cultural practice well beyond what the Qur'an condones. May God bless her and keep Fawzia Koofi strong in her faith and good health. She is a voice of moderation in Islam and a sensible interpreter of living a productive, active life in the modern world as an observant Muslim.

Nixon A490 001 Mens Black Watch

Nixon A490 001 Mens Black Watch

From the first page, this book had me smiling. Another murder has taken place in Shipshewana during The Fall Festival and this time the murderer knows all about Callie and their little town. The murderer claims that Callie has access to a load of money that she knows nothing about and this person is threatening her loved ones. It's up to Callie, Deborah, Melinda, Esther, their families, and the police department to find out how to stop this murderer without anyone else getting hurt.

It's difficult to have sympathy for a man who murders an old woman then attempts to hurt a dog, children, and a police officer. This person is either desperate or extremely dangerous or both!

The reader does not get to witness Callie dumping iced tea on anyone in this book (read the book Falling to Pieces for that wonderful scene), but in Material Witness we get to read about her falling in love which is also unchartered territory for Callie. However, her feisty behavior is enjoyed throughout the book.

Even though there is sweet romance in this story, the most enjoyable part was watching the Amish community, Callie's friends and their families, band together in unexpected ways to find this killer while keeping Callie and Max safe. This community watches out for their own and even though they are a peaceful bunch, they still take risks in doing the right thing. I was eager to see who Callie falls in love with. Even though it wasn't the man I had initially hoped it would be, I was very pleased with Callie's choice and Chapman does an excellent job making this man a perfect match for Callie. One of the characters in the story watched a John Wayne movie so there are several references to that.

This book isn't a typical page-turner, but it's a wonderful conclusion to the series and it's a treat to see how everything gets resolved. I highly recommend it. This book can be considered a stand alone, but my suggestion is to read the other two books before it so the reader will fully understand each relationship and why Callie feels hesitancy about certain things. Chapman does an amazing job describing the friendship Callie experiences with Deborah, Melinda, and Esther but that friendship slowly blossoms from the first book.

A Painted House (DVD) based on novel by John Grisham

A Painted House Scott Glenn

A Painted House Scott Glenn

Having listened to this book on tape, my husband and I were delighted to see that Hallmark Hall of Fame had turned this wonderful story into a film. We were not disappointed.

This story takes place in Arkansas and is set in September of 1952. The Chandler family owns a farm. They grow cotton and hire both, Mexican migrant workers and Hill people, to pick their crop. The two groups clash when they meet on the Chandler farm. The story is told by 10 year old Luke Chandler. Logan Lerman gave a memorable performance as Luke. The entire cast was good, and we also enjoyed Scott Glenn in the role of Luke's grandfather.

John Grisham's books are always captivating, but this is my favorite. I wish that he would write more stories like this one. It gave us a look at America in a different era when baseball was an American past time and families worked together for a common goal. It also showed the relationship between the farmers and migrant workers who shared the responsibility of harvesting the cotton.

If there was ever a chameleon of authors it's Ms. Sivec! It seems that no mater the genre everything she writes turns to gold! she's that damn good of a writer. It this action/ suspense/ romance series we get to see these bad ass navy seals with flaws not only try to win the girl but we get to try to work out the case in our heads and discover plots twists we never see comming! In book 1 we fell for Garrett (swoon!) and in this 2nd book we get to meet and fall head over heels for responsible Brady who has the weight of the world on his shoulders. It seems like the last person he would ever fall for is pop princess Layla but, like in most cases, the perception you have of someone is the complete opposite of who they really are. This was a completely awesome book and I can't wait for book 3!

Fascinating Look at Non-Verbal Cues and the Nature of Evil!

Poison A Novel Bloodline Trilogy

Poison A Novel Bloodline Trilogy

This is an intriguing mystery involving a young woman who survived the murder of half her family by her step-father. He claimed that someone named Lucent made him do it, but everyone believed he was just a hallucination. Now, seven years later, Keelyn is confronted by a man who claims to be Lucent, threatens her, and says he's with her estranged sister who is now missing. She takes in her toddler niece, but danger follows them at every turn as the bodies keep piling up and someone watches her. Keelyn wonders if her fiance can handle this new addition to their life, along with wondering about the things he's not telling her. She also volunteers with abused women and is an expert in reading body language, so she gets involved in trying to find a missing woman's children and trying to figure out if the woman is involved herself.

I found this story fascinating, especially Keelyn's reading of people's body language. From using it for cases to trying to figure out the people in her life, it made for a compelling study. I also liked the details to the police procedure and the non-stop suspense. This is book two in the Bloodline Trilogy, but I didn't feel lost not having read the first one. I'll definitely be looking for more of her books!

I received this book free from Kregel Publications in exchange for an honest review.

Plague ebook

Plague ebook

... of what could you could be in for if a modern day plague broke out. The author gives the reader a glimpse into the final days of a family as they deal with the ramifications of a modern, incurable strain of bubonic plague. When Liz's 4 year old son begins to show signs of being ill, she thinks it is a cold and continues his daily routine. As word of a plague epidemic in the southern part of the country spreads, and her son's symptoms worsen, she realizes that maybe he is more ill than she thought. As any concerned parent would do, she calls the medical help line for confirmation and assistance. When "help" does arrive, it is in the form of a military unit that boards them into their home. They are given aspirin and a mild sedative, and are told to try to make their son comfortable. Then, the plague spreads to Johnny, Liz's husband. She knows she's next, but still has to try to care for the two dying men in her life.

This story is not for the feint of heart, or weak of stomach. Ms. Hinsley goes into all the gorey details of what the family goes through during their brief bought with a fatal illness. It is all too easy to put yourself in Liz's shoes and wonder what on earth you would do when faced with such a hopeless and dire situation. Very highly recommended!

Olivia "Liv" Crawford's dream of opening her own bakery is about to come true. She's found the perfect location, signed the lease, and all that's left before opening her dream, Cupcake!, are the renovations.
A public relations executive at Weston Communications, Jake Miller has a dream of his own, turn his hobby - photography- into a career. Given an opportunity to become a VP, a promotion Jake believes will help him make his dream come true, Jake's mission is to get Olivia Crawford to take a meeting with his boss.
Working her last night as a bartender at McLean's Bar and Grill, Liv can't take her eyes off the gorgeous hunk of a man who's just walked in. Caught off guard by the bartender's beauty, Jake finds himself distracted all night. Only Liv doesn't do relationships, or believe in a happy ever after. She also doesn't believe she can juggle both a career and a man.
Jake manages to get Liv to let him in her life. Now he just has to keep his secret mission of getting her to take a meeting with his boss from ruining everything.

A Taste of Trouble, by Gina Gordon, is fantastic! I thought the world building was excellent and the character development was perfect. The story's pace is fast and has just a hint of wit and humor, which helped make the book more believable. I considered Live and Jake good friends by the middle of the story.

I enjoyed how Ms. Gordon developed the characters as the story progresses. At first, Jake appears to be the ultimate player, he's charming, has killer looks, and a body to die for. However, I soon discovered there's more to Jake than meets the eye; he's confident but has a vulnerable side which makes him endearing. I fell in love with him.

Liv is a great heroine; she's strong willed, self assured, and has a wall built around her heart. I enjoyed learning about Liv and how she always took charge of her life. She had to overcome a lot of setbacks, but refused to give up. The sex scenes between Liv and Jake are explosive and contained a lot of emotion.

I loved A Taste of Trouble and would recommend it to everyone, especially those with a sweet tooth. This is the first book I've read by Ms. Gordon and I plan to read more of her books. Now I'm craving a Cupcake!

Last Boyfriend Forever Love ebook

Last Boyfriend Forever Love ebook

Fred Hiatt's "Nine Days" is a jewel of a book. It seamlessly blends several genres, featuring a tightly-drawn adventure, a budding romance and a dead-serious discourse about China's history, culture and political repression, practiced by the Chinese Communist government.

The structure of the plot is well-sketched and quickly engages the reader. Ti-Anna Chen's father, a famous Chinese dissident living in exile in the United States, disappears during a visit to Hong Kong, where he was expected to meet with Chinese dissidents. Ti-Anna's mother and other adults seem powerless to do anything. And so, the teenagers take the initiative.

Ti-Anna, accompanied by her high-school friend, Ethan Wynkoop, embarks on a journey to find her father and rescue him. They travel first to Hong Kong, retrace Chen's footsteps and are eventually steered to Hanoi. There, they run afoul of a sex trafficking ring and discover that Ti-Anna's father was kidnapped by Chinese security agents and is now imprisoned in China.

While the action is fast-paced, the adventures are believable. The characters are strongly drawn, and the voices, particularly of Ethan Wynkoop, who functions as the main narrator, are both compelling and authentic. The portrayals of Hong Kong and Hanoi - of its streets, foods and people - are vivid and colorful. Be warned, the book may turn many readers into noodle aficionados. The budding romance between Ti-Anna and Ethan is portrayed sparingly and tastefully and meshes well with the narrative.

The book's authenticity stems in part from the fact that it builds upon a true story of Ti-Anna Chen's real-life counterpart, Ti-Anna Wang, whose father, Wang Bingzhang, was kidnapped by the Chinese government during a trip to Vietnam, where he went to meet with Chinese dissidents. It also helps a great deal that the author is able to infuse skillfully, through Ethan's narrator voice, a wealth of information about China's culture and political history into both the plot and character development.

This fascinating adventure tale is oriented at young adults and, with any luck, will spark interest in them about the real-life dramatic issues that populate today's newspaper headlines. But, even if you don't have a teenager in your house, consider reading the book for yourself. It is a guilty pleasure and well worth it.
