Bamboo Promise 2nd Edition Without

I love the book. After, I started to read it I could not put it down. I read when I can. You can see the events in your mind as you read. I admire the author. I can tell she told the truth. The book shed light on Cambodian culture, history, legends, and the horror genocide, and more importantly you will have a better understanding on Cambodia's political situation at the time and how it affected the current politics. Most Khmer people who lived through these horrors do not wanted to be reminded of them so they do not past on the events to their children. My parents are also survivors. They never told me much about the era but whatever they told me I kept it in my heart. I grew up in America. I never had a sense of belonging. This book made me understand my people's past and I hope now that I have learned this I can somehow make sure it is not forgotten and most of all I hope this horror do not repeat itself. Please, I recommend this book to everyone especially to all Khmer people. I wish they can make a movie out of this. Its a very touching autobiography.

  2. This was a great book that was difficult to put down and go to bed at night. You just wanted to keep reading! As far as the story goes I was torn between being so impress how she survived and crying about all the terrible things that happened to her, her family, friends, and country. I can't wait for the movie!

  4. This book recounts the atrocities of the Killing Fields, told by someone who lived through it while watching her family be destroyed. It is hard to imagine going through such an ordeal and is described with intricate detail. Living in the USA, we become isolated from the reality of what others in a restricted society must put up with. I enjoyed this book as it described an event in my lifetime of which I was aware but did not fully understand the hardships of those that lived in Cambodia during the war.

  5. This is a very gripping story. There are many emotions the reader will experience. This is the story of a woman who courageously lived through the Genocide in Cambodia when 2 million of her countrymen were murdered, starved or left to die from illness. The author takes you on her journey in the prison without walls as she cunningly does everything possible to keep her beloved father alive. You get to know the characters and their personalities as she describes each one and her relationship with each before the seizure of her home and city by the Khumer Rouge (the Black Crows). As a woman of wealth and privilege sent to work and die in the killing fields, she draws you in with each tear, feeling of shock, fear and surrender. You feel the author's loss as one by one each family member succumbs to starvation and illness. She watches as her husband of 3 months is taken away to be killed. When she lost her father, the last family member to die, she lost all hope and checked herself into a KR makeshift hospital where people literally went to die. She did this just months before the Vietnamese overtook the Khumer Rouge and rescued those who survived. No one ever thinks this could happen to them, certainly Vichera, and especially her father, didn't. When you read this you realize this could happen in any country, any time.

Before reading this story I had no idea the Cambodian Genocide and the atrocities this ensued even happened. This is a must read book and, I am sure, a must watch movie when someone is smart enough to recognize its potential.

  6. This is a truly remarkable autobiography. From a life of privilege in Phnom Penh - told in the most marvellous detail - to the nightmare scenario of survival in the killing fields, this compelling and deeply moving memoir has all the elements of a great read. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

  7. "Bamboo Promise" by Vicheara Houn is an amazing story about hope, faith and love during the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s.
I am certain it will be on the best selling book list for 2013.

  8. I finally finished your book "Bamboo Promise. I was so uneducated to the suffering of your people. I ache at the thought of how humanity can be so cruel to each other and I am so sorry you endured such hardship in your life. However, I know that you are an exceptional human being because you survived! Though your father's method of discipline to bend you like a bamboo" seemed so harsh to me, in the long run it made you an extremely strong bamboo yourself. YOU DID NOT BREAK! He actually helped you be strong. I would like to think his last words were not the combination to his safe but the combination to his heart. I would think he wanted to tell you that you were the other half of his broken heart and would always be.
I will recommend your narrative to me friends and family. It is an honor to have met you.
