Well Worth The Wait!!

Shattered Alaskan Courage Dani Pettrey

Shattered Alaskan Courage Dani Pettrey

Reef McKenna, the prodigal brother, has returned home. However, his family's joy is short-lived. A young woman is murdered nearby and two witnesses place Reef at the scene of the crime, covered in the victim's blood. The Sheriff is up for re-election and wants nothing more than a swift proceeding. With all the evidence pointing to Reef, they immediately arrest him and place him on trial, in spite of his adamant claims of innocence.

Piper McKenna knows her brother. Despite his flaws, he could never kill anyone and she is determined to prove it, with or without Detective Landon Grainger's help. Her investigation uncovers a much bigger plot -- a dangerous motorcycle club and cover-up are just the beginning. Her search for answers places Piper in the crosshairs of a killer who has no qualms of murdering again if it means keeping the truth from surfacing.

Intrigue and danger lurk within the pages of Dani Pettrey's novel, Shattered, as readers return to Yancey, Alaska for another spellbinding adventure. The author creates some of the most enjoyable and engaging characters I've ever come across. I love Landon and Piper's relationship as they discover that they don't just care about each other like a brother and sister as they always believed. As the series progresses, I'm more and more drawn in by Jake, the mysterious stranger the McKenna family has taken in as one of their own. I hope we learn some of his secrets in future books. There's also Gage and his struggles to face his demons and come to terms with the loss of his son. These are just a few of the fascinating people we meet throughout the Alaskan Courage Series.

Pettrey builds a world that captures the reader with vivid and compelling descriptions. She has a way of making frigid, snowy Alaska sound cool (no pun intended!). I wanted to throw on my heaviest, winter coat and thick boots to jump right into the adventure. I'm now anxiously awaiting the next installment that, in my opinion, won't come fast enough. I strongly recommend this novel to romantic suspense fans. While Shattered can stand alone, you won't want to miss Submerged, the first book in the series.

  1. Piper McKenna would make a great friend: trusting, devoted to her family, sweet, dogged about her beliefs, and right now she believes in her brother's innocence. She strives for open communication in relationships, while Landon prefers not to lay all his cards on the table. It doesn't help his cause when he's forced to investigate Piper's brother for murder.

I have a feeling I missed a major event introducing Piper and Landon's story in the first book of Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series, Submerged, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of Shattered. Shattered picks up with Landon's realization that he's way past the friend stage with Piper, but she doesn't have a clue about her feelings, or his, yet.

The author did a fabulous job with characterization. You either loved characters, like Piper, or you hated them, like Meredith. The dialog between Piper and Landon was fun and witty, and in some spots, laugh out loud. I loved getting to know the rest of the McKenna family, too.

The first few pages required a second go-through to familiarize myself with everybody and what was happening, but then, WOW! It's been a long time since I enjoyed a book this much, a book that made me forget about watching my favorite television shows, cooking dinner, picking up the grandkids from school, you fill in the blank. The suspense, while not nail-biting, was enough to keep me turning the pages, and the romance satisfied my sweet spot.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series which I'm fairly sure will feature Gage and Darcy's romance. And YES, I liked this book so much, I already scooped up Submerged.

Disclaimer: A huge thanks to NetGalley and Bethany House Publisher for providing me with a free advance copy in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.

  2. In this exciting sequel to last year's Submerged, Piper McKenna is in for a surprise when her estranged brother, Reef, shows up at her doorsteps covered in blood. The very same night, not too far away, a young woman is found murdered and two witnesses confirm that Reef was at the scene of the crime. Despite the fact that Reef claims he is innocent of the murder, the sheriff arrests and charges him with murder.

Piper's relationship with her brother has many flaws, but she believes that he is telling the truth. She tries to get her friend, Deputy Landon Grainger, to help her prove Reef's innocence, but Landon is bound to enforce the law and is put in an awkward position.

To help her brother, Piper must uncover a mystery that will take her deep into the backcountry of Canada as she tries to unravel who the real killer is.

I loved reading the first book in the series, Submerged, and I eagerly signed up to read the sequel, which I received free in exchange for my honest review. A majority of Christian fiction series has different main characters for each book, so it was a nice surprise to find Piper McKenna back for another round of mystery and suspense as she tries to prove her brother's innocence. Author Dani Pettrey does a great job of crafting an intriguing plot that kept me guessing until the very end. I can't wait until the third book is released.

  3. In this second book of the Alaskan Courage series, we learn more about Landon Grainger. I was somewhat put off by the fact that the first book didn't wind up his story. But this second book lets the reader learn all about him. The action is intense and the writing is great. The characters are developed as well as the plot. This book doesn't leave you hanging quite like the first book did, but I liked that about it. I will definately read the third book in the series. I really enjoy this new author's style.

You don't want to miss this one!

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of Shattered since I read Submerged last year. Reconnecting with the McKennas is such a delight! I fell in love with Piper and Landon from the beginning and I'm so happy their story came next.

Picking a favorite McKenna is like picking a favorite book or child, you just shouldn't do it. I love them all! Granted, I don't know too much about Reef yet so it's hard to tell if I like him as much as the others. That being said, Piper's story is just as exciting, if not more so, than Cole's.

Shattered has a slightly different feel to it than the first in the Alaskan Courage series; probably because I am familiar with the characters and their dynamics. Nonetheless, it's a good different. I loved watching the early signs of romance between Gage and Darcy. I loved watching Piper and Landon interact. And I loved seeing Bailey and Cole so in love.

As a big fan of romantic suspense and mystery, I thoroughly loved this one and I cannot wait for Stranded to come out later this year! (Also, as a quick minor note I would not recommend this series to a younger audience but rather to older teens and adults. ;D)

I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review of my opinions, which I have done. Thank you, Dani!

  7. I could not put this book down! If you like adventure and romance in a Christian fiction book, you will not be disappointed.

  8. One of the most fascinating things about this book and its predecessor, Submerged, is halfway through the book you are already looking forward to the next book and what plot will bring two people together. I love the way the suspect is watching Piper McKenna, but you have know idea who the suspect is. It is like watching a movie where you are looking through the killer's eyes. There are several twists and turns to the point that you can't even remotely guess who the killer is or the motive. Along the way, we learn what kind of person the victim really was, and even though she was not well liked, you come to understand the difficulties in her life that made her who she was (or maybe wasn't). This book was provided to me by Bethany House for my review.
